What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR therapy_edited_edited.jpg

EMDR therapy is an evidence based, therapeutic process using bilateral stimulation that helps people reprocess difficult situations and trauma in a way that reduces distress and build resilience. It's especially useful for trauma related issues as well as for pain management, relationship difficulties, grief, and anxiety.

EMDR is based on the idea that when an event or thought overwhelms the brain’s natural processing system, memories remain "frozen" in a dysfunctional state. EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories, so they become less distressing and more adaptive.

Here’s why it works, according to research and theory:

  • Bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) may mimic the brain activity of REM sleep, which is crucial for emotional processing.

  • It reduces emotional intensity and re-links traumatic memories with more positive, rational beliefs.

  • It avoids prolonged exposure or detailed verbal recounting of trauma, which can make it more tolerable for some clients.

  • It's often shown in studies to produce faster symptom relief compared to traditional talk therapy.

What is Art Psychotherapy?
Paint

Art therapy is a psychotherapeutic process which uses the client-artist's visual expression as well as their verbal reflections to creatively work through issues promoting healing, personal empowerment and the ability to gather insight needed for moving through life's challenges.

The therapist and the participant work together to understand the meaning of the artwork created as it relates to the individual's intentions for therapy. The artwork can be used as a focus for discussion, analysis and self-exploration.  No artistic ability is needed just a willingness to experiment with the media.

Our bodies know that they belong; it is our minds that make our lives so homeless. Guided by longing, belonging is the wisdom of rhythm. When we are in rhythm with our own nature, things flow and balance naturally.

Grateful to be working and playing on the unceded ancestral territory of the Autonomous Sinixt peoples as well as the Sylix, Ktunaxa, and Secwépemc nations over time.  I celebrate the resilience and resistance of these traditional caretakers of the beautiful place that I am privileged to call home.  I strive to honour Indigenous traditions, teachings, individuals, communities and lands with acts of service and reconcili-action.  I pledge to walk humbly and respectfully during my visit and continue to devote energy to our collective healing.
